It’s the perfect base for many popular fra diavolo pasta dishes (such as chicken, seafood, or shrimp fra diavolo), but don’t just add this spicy sauce to pasta. It’s a great dipping sauce with bread sticks. Mozzarella sticks and fresh veggies, or try mixing it with eggs to spice up your breakfast.

Crushed red pepper is the source of heat in this fdiavolo sauce recipe. So adjust the spiciness to suit your tolerance level. A tablespoon is a good place to start. But if you choose a “saucier” sauce, add tomato puree. (Optional) Try adding a second tablespoon for even heating.

  • 1 can tomato puree, 28 oz.
  • 1 yellow onion, chopped
  • 5 garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 tablespoons minced basil
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon crushed red chili
  • 1 tablespoon fresh parsley
  • Add 1 teaspoon salt to taste
  • 1 teaspoon additional pepper for taste
  • 1 can tomato puree – to add to a thinner sauce
  • Heat a high skillet with olive oil over medium heat. Then add the crushed onion, garlic and red pepper. Heat, stirring frequently until onion is tender (3 to 4 minutes).

  • Add tomato puree, salt and pepper. If you like a “saucier” sauce, you can add a can of tomato puree here (optional). Turn on high heat and bring the mixture to a boil quickly. Then reduce heat until boiling. Simmer for 10 to 15 minutes or until desired thickness is achieved.

  • Add parsley and basil. Cook for 2 more minutes, stirring frequently.

  • Turn off the heat and let cool for 5 minutes. Serve with cooked pasta or spicy tomato sauce.

Like it’s spicy? Use a bit of crushed red pepper. Especially if you choose a “saucier” sauce use extra tomato puree.
