Of course, this isn’t the most authentic mole sauce recipe in town. But it’s one of the simplest recipes. Our easy mole sauce also tastes great. With the earthy flavors you’d expect: cinnamon, cocoa powder, brown sugar, etc., it pairs well with chicken and enchiladas. Or try mixing it with eggs or pouring it on top of fries for a delicious taste. It is also a great steak sauce for grilled dishes.

Mole sauce may not look appetizing on the plate. But here it has all the flavors!

If you always have a full spice rack stocked, most of the ingredients you probably already have. Ancho chili powder can be found in many grocery stores. Just look for good spices on store shelves. They can also bring in ancho peppers as an alternative and then simply grind the dried chilies into a powder for this recipe.

  • 1 can diced tomatoes, 15 oz.
  • 2 onions, chopped
  • 2 cloves minced garlic
  • 2 cups of water
  • 1/4 cup chili powder
  • 3 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 3 tablespoons peanut butter
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon anchovy powder
  • 3/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  • pinch of ground cloves
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Heat oil in a pan over medium heat.

  • Add the chopped onion and sauté, stirring frequently, until the onion is browned, about 10 minutes.

  • Add paprika, paprika, brown sugar, garlic, cinnamon, and cloves, and stir for about 1 minute until fragrant.

  • Add tomatoes, peanut butter, cocoa powder and water, stir well.

  • Reduce heat to medium and cook sauce, stirring occasionally, for 15 minutes.

  • Turn off the heat and season with salt and pepper.
